At our February Monthly Meeting, members of Arizona Three Arrows Combat Medics (ATACM) ā an allāvolunteer streetāmedic collective formed in 2025 to support Migra Watch rapidāresponse efforts and demonstrations against DHSārelated harm ā led a focused training on deāescalation for political demonstrators.
ATACM introduced threat modeling and onātheāground risk assessment: scanning the environment, noticing shifts in energy, and communicating early. The goal isnāt paranoia but being āalert and ready.ā
scan the environment for shifts in energy or behavior
identify potential flashpoints early
communicate observations to others
ATACM emphasized that attitude is the strongest tool in deāescalation. Calm tone and grounded body language help redirect attention away from vulnerable participants.
Core techniques include redirecting attention, interrupting line of sight, separating conflicts early, and using chants or noise to drown out harmful escalation. Prepare with simple gearāPPE, radios, sunglasses, noisemakers, snacks, and waterāto support both safety and communication.
A key takeaway: deāescalators are not āpeace police.ā Our responsibility is to our own groupās conduct, not enforcing a single approach across a diverse movement. We are reminded that āwe do not OWN the movementā and highlight the St. Paul Principles ā respecting diverse tactics, keeping criticism internal, and refusing to assist state repression.
If a situation becomes unsafe or counterproductive, exiting is always an option.
